LDL 101 - Teaching Lakota/Dakota Level 1
This course is an intensive practical overview of teaching Lakota using the Speak Lakota! Level 1 Textbook. This course will also emphasize introducing and reinforcing vocabulary with flashcards, props, and Total Physical Response (TPR) methods. It will also address classroom management techniques for the language classroom as well as using different teaching modalities to address diverse learning styles.
LDL 341 Reading II
As a follow up on Reading 1 this course will offer students more in-depth knowledge in using reading as a method of learning and teaching a second language. The participants of this class will work on increasing their reading comprehension. They will also learn about various strategies for reading comprehension, such as the schema theory approach, as well as using reading comprehension as sociocognitive processing which view comprehension as a process that involves meaning negotiation among text, readers and teachers. This course is an intensive practical overview of teaching Lakota using the Speak Lakota! Level 4 textbook. This course will emphasize teaching reading skills in Lakota through the concepts of advance organizers and schema; teaching structures and grammar through contextualized exercises; teaching vocabulary through props, flahscards and Total Physical Response methods; and teaching conversational skills through task-based small-group activities. LDL 252 Northern Plains Sign Language
This course is an intensive practical introduction to Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL) and explores how it was a primary mean of intertribal and trade communication between the Lakota, Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Arapaho, and Crow prior to the arrival of Europeans and the rise of the use of English. LDL 350 Neologism Development I
This course will develop skills necessary to create new words and phrases in Lakhota for new vocabulary and expressions, explore the traditional methods employed in Lakȟóta words, and identify the words and expressions that have come into existence over the years in the process of cultural/social change among the Lakȟóta people. A thorough understanding of the culture is necessary for creating new vocabulary and expressions for use in Lakȟóta.
LDL 321 Intensive Lakota/Dakota for Intermediates I
This is the first of three courses for students of Lakota as a second language on intermediate level. The course will introduce the students to both spoken and written Lakota, and it will help them practice all language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing. This Course will familiarize Teachers with a play written for performance in Lakota (“Iktomi’s New Wife”), introduce theater script format, and build basic skills and experience in performance and stage production. The purpose is to empower teachers to use the script and dramatic play in their classrooms so that students can practice speaking Lakota in conversational settings with an underlying story. An understanding of basic stagecraft will allow teachers to help their students put on the play or scenes from the play for their classmates and families.
LDL 110 Phonology
A linguistic understanding of Lakota is essential to teaching the language knowledgably and being effective in the classroom. Proper teaching of Lakota is dependent on a firm foundation in the sound system and rules of a language. This course is the primary linguistic introduction to the Lakota phonetic system– its sounds and writing system.
